Toothing

Toothing is a new phenomenon in the United Kingdom. On the back of such sexual leisure activities such as Swinging and Dogging, Toothing is the latest in ‘no strings attached’ sex with relative strangers.

Toothing was born from an elaborate hoax by a magazine which set up a fake forum. The thought behind the concept was brilliant in its simplicity that toothing became a reality. The idea is this; Mobile phones, laptops and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) with Bluetooth technology are enabled in places such as the tube, metro, buses, trains, cafes or anywhere you maybe in close proximity to people. A search is executed and a list of neighbouring devices is shown on the screen. These other Bluetooth devices will be between 10 and 30 metres away. The text "Toothing?" is sent to neighbouring devices as the first contact then wait for replies.

An example of a reply would be “MorF?” meaning male or female and so the conversation progresses. See below for a list of abbreviations used in toothing.

So, toothing started off as something just to fill pages on a forum and a magazine. Now toothing is set to become the biggest ‘no strings sex’ phenomenon since the dogging craze burst out countrywide. At the moment toothing has a disadvantage of only being able to contact people in a 10 metre radius but with the speed and development of technology today Bluetooth in some larger devices is capable of hitting the 100 metre mark. It is only a matter of time before mobile phones can attain this distance. The chipset company Atheros make a chip for 1000 metre for Wi Fi technology which, although isn’t as flexible as toothing, points that the technology for toothing achieving further distances is not too far away.
