Syphilis
Bacterium Treponema Pallidium Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by Treponema Pallidium. Syphilis can be contracted during the primary or secondary stages through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex. If left untreated this disease that can cause serious problems.
Symptoms
for men and women include:- Symptoms
of Syphilis are the same in both men and women. They can, however, be
difficult to recognise There are three
stages to Syphilis with the primary
and secondary stages being the most infectious Painless yet infectious ulcers appear on the part of your body the bacteria entered your body E.g. On women the lips of the vagina, the clitoris, the cervix and around the opening of the urethra, On men the penis and foreskin, anus and mouth. These can then last for around 6 weeks. After 6 to 12 weeks and up to a few years after the appearance of the ulcers the secondary stage symptoms begin to occur. This can include; sores in the mouth, rashes covering the whole of the body or in patches (often on the hands and feet), warty growths on genitals, a feeling of tiredness and loss of appetite, swollen glands and patchy hair loss. The symptoms of secondary syphilis can then disappear but the infection is still lying dormant, and can do for many years!
Treatment at any time during these first two stages of syphilis will cure the infection. This can be simply done with a course of penicillin, whilst at the same time avoiding sex until the treatment has been completed. It is also important that any sexual partner(s) you may have had are also informed and checked to ensure that further transmission of the bacterium is kept to a minimum.
If left untreated tertiary syphilis develops leading to heart, joint and nervous system damage. This may be irreversible and is potentially fatal if left untreated. If you suspect you may have syphilis it is therefore vitally important that you receive medical help fast. |
