Non-Specific Urethritis

Non-Specific Urinary (NSU) infection is an inflammation of the urethra (The tube that carries urine and semen through the penis). It is one of the most common STI’s in men as there are a variety of ways that it can be caused.

Unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex with someone who has contracted Chlamydia

Vigorous sexual activity causing damage to the urethra

Allergic reactions to alcohol washing powders or bubble baths

Left untreated the infection can spread to the prostate gland and testicles resulting in complications, which can then lead to reduced fertility. Likewise women who have sex with men with NSU are at risk of catching Chlamydia and this can ultimately lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), causing infertility.

 Symptoms in Men

Tingling or burning at the tip of the penis

Discharge which is clear at first but can turn yellowish without treatment

  Dampness under the foreskin

Pain or a burning sensation when passing urine

The need to pass urine more often

 Symptoms in Women

  Vaginal discharge

  Burning sensation when urinating

NSU responds well to antibiotic treatment however, the condition may take longer to cure in certain people and recur in others. The condition is usually cleared after 10 to 14 days NSU may reappear, but rarely. Those who do not refrain from sexual intercourse or masturbation throughout the treatment may need a further course of antibiotics.
