HIV and AIDS

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) leads to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), which is the condition when the body’s immune system becomes so damaged that it cannot fight simple infections. HIV symptoms are rare which explains why many people do not realize they have the virus, however when AIDS takes over frequent Herpes infections are common amongst many other illness, which a healthy person could normally fight off.

There are four main ways to contract HIV:-

  Vaginal, anal or oral sex without the use of a condom with someone who has HIV

  Use of needles, syringes or other drug-injecting equipment that is infected with HIV

  From a woman with HIV to her baby (before or during birth) and by breastfeeding

  Receiving infected blood, blood products or donated organs as part of medical treatment

There is no cure for HIV or AIDS. Treatment of HIV, however, can delay the onset of AIDS. The best form of prevention therefore against HIV is to ensure  condoms are always used when having any form of sexual intercourse.
