Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is an inflammation of the liver and is usually the result of a viral infection. The Hepatitis C virus is spread by contaminated blood on things such as needles, unsterilised equipment for tattooing, acupuncture or body piercing or via unprotected penetrative sex, where blood is drawn. It is also transmitted through blood transfusion in countries where blood is not tested for Hepatitis C. Over the long term, chronic Hepatitis C can cause serious liver damage, including liver failure, liver cirrhosis and liver cancer Many people show no symptoms but can still pass on the virus to others

Symptoms include:-

  Flu-like illness

  Fatigue

  Nausea and vomiting

  Diarrhoea

  Loss of appetite

  Weight loss

  Dark urine

  Jaundice

  Itchy skin

Treatment is available for Hepatitis C but is not suitable for everybody. However some patients can be successfully treated and will clear the virus.
