Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is potentially very serious causing inflammation and serious damage to your liver. The majority of people who catch Hepatitis B only suffer from early stages of Hepatitis B (acute) and go on to recover. About 1 in 20 will develop the more serious ‘chronic’ Hepatitis B, which can cause liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver failure. Hepatitis B is very infectious (spreading 100 times more easily than HIV) and is passed on through contaminated blood.

Symptoms  include:-

  Nausea and vomiting

  Diarrhoea

  Loss of appetite

  Weight loss

  Jaundice

  Itchy skin

Many people do not require treatment, as inflammation of the liver may not be severe. If you do need treatment you may be offered interferon injections or antiviral tablets, which can reduce Hepatitis B damage.   Immunisation is available for people who are at regarded as high risk of getting Hepatitis B Three injections of Hepatitis B vaccine are given over a period of 3-6 months You should then be immune for at least 5 years.
