Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection, which can ultimately cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women and then serious fertility problems. If you are pregnant and catch Gonorrhoea, you may pass the infection to your baby. Symptoms usually appear within 2 to 10 days after sexual contact with an infected partner, but some people may be infected for several months without showing symptoms. The most common way of catching Gonorrhoea is through unprotected, penetrative sex but it can also be transmitted through rimming (where a person uses their mouth and tongue to stimulate another person’s anus).

Symptoms for women include: -

Bleeding associated with vaginal intercourse.

Painful or burning sensations when urinating.

Anal discharge - if acquired through anal sex.

A discharge from the vaginal area.

Symptoms for men include :-

A yellow/white discharge, which normally appears 3-5 days after infection.

A white, yellow or green coloured discharge from the tip of the penis.

Painful or burning sensations when urinating.

Anal discharge - if acquired through anal sex.

Pain or tenderness caused by inflammation of the testicles or prostate gland.

Gonorrhoea needs treating immediately once individuals are aware of the symptoms. If it is left untreated, the disease can cause serious complications. A single dose of antibiotics is usually used to treat Gonorrhoea. If it has not successful, you will be prescribed a different treatment at your doctors or GUM clinic.
