Genital Warts

Genital warts are small growths which may appear anywhere on a man or Woman’s genital area. A virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) causes Genital Warts. They are very common are contagious and most sexually active people have been exposed to the genital wart virus yet never show any symptoms. Genital warts are transmitted via skin-to-skin contact during oral, vaginal, or anal sex or by the use of unwashed sex toys with an infected person. Using condoms whilst having sex will reduce your risk of developing genital warts.

Symptoms include:-

Pink or white small lumps on the genital area occurring singularly or in groups.

Genital warts can be found in women on the vulva and cervix, and inside and surrounding the vagina and anus.

If a woman has warts on her cervix, this can cause slight bleeding.

Occasionally women may have an unusual coloured vaginal discharge.

In men, genital warts may appear on the scrotum or penis and around the anus. They may itch, but are usually painless.

There are cases where genital warts have been found on the thigh and groin.

There are a variety of treatments available if your doctor or GUM clinic diagnoses genital warts. Often more than one kind of treatment is necessary before the warts are gone.

The doctor may apply a weak vinegar-like solution (acetic acid) to the outside of the genital area.

You may be prescribed an anti wart liquid or cream.

In some cases freezing off the warts or laser treatment may be needed.

In rare cases you may have to have surgery to remove them.

The majority of people whose Genital warts initially disappear will get a recurrence as the virus is still present in your body It is therefore important that you continue to go for regular check ups.
