Genital Herpes  

Genital Herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), a very infectious viruses of which there are 2 Types. They can both affect the mouth/nose areas (causing cold sores) and genital/anal areas (causing blisters). As the Herpes Virus is transmitted through skin contact with a carrier, the most common forms of transmission are via kissing, penetrative sex or through oral sex.

 Symptoms include: -

Itching or tingling in the genital area

Pain when passing urine

Flu-like symptoms such as a headache, backache and high temperature

Pain down the thigh and legs or in the groin

Blisters, which burst leaving painful ulcers

Taking antiviral drugs that will help reduce the severity of an attack can treat genital herpes, however, there is currently no cure. Recurrent infections are usually milder as the sores will be smaller, fewer and less painful and usually there are no flu-like symptoms. The virus in extremely contagious before and after an outbreak it is therefore recommended to use condoms to protect yourself from genital herpes.
