Chlamydia

Chlamydia is the leading cause of female infertility and the most commonly sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK, yet it is curable and preventable! Chlamydia is passed on through having unprotected sex with someone who is already infected. This includes oral or penetrative sex. You can reduce your chances of getting Chlamydia by using condoms every time you have sex.

Symptoms for women include:-

Yellow vaginal discharge

Burning sensation when passing urine

Pain during sex

Bleeding between periods

Fever and discomfort in the lower abdomen (This is symptomatic of the infection having now spread and causing pelvic inflammatory disease)

Symptoms for men include:-

Burning sensation when passing urine

A clear/white discharge from the end of the penis

Painful swelling of the testicles or scrotum (This is symptomatic of the infection having now spread and causing epidydimitis, a very serious illness which can cause infertility)

Chlamydia can be diagnosed easily from a simple urine sample or a swab from the vagina and cervix in women, or the urethra in men. The treatment for Chlamydia is then simple and effective. A course of antibiotics will be given and you will be asked to avoid sex until your treatment is completed. Inform your sex partners that you have Chlamydia so they can be tested and treated.
